Dr. Nystrom’s practice emphasizes psychological evaluations. He conducts pre-employment evaluations and fitness for duty evaluations for law enforcement agencies and a variety of other referral sources, disability/return to work evaluations, veteran compensation and pension evaluations, pain management evaluations, independent opinion examinations, forensic evaluations, and sex offender cases. He is involved in crisis intervention services especially for first responders as well as maintaining a caseload of cognitive-behavioral therapy cases focused on depression, anxiety, habit control, insomnia, and pain management.

Currently he is a psychology member of the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board and is the 2019 president of Division 31 of APA. He has twice been the president of the Kansas Psychological Association and has been the Federal Advocacy Coordinator for Kansas for 20 years. He recently completed six years on the APA Council of Representatives and headed a Work Group making recommendations about APA policies and procedures concerning governance. This work is emphasizing transparency, nimbleness, increased efficiency, and accountability in APA governance. He also serves on the APA Committee on Rural Health.
